Cradle to Cradle inspired Buildings
Energy-efficient, CO2-neutral and autonomous buildings are in line with the trend. But our aim is to go beyond this approach and create buildings that return nutrients to the environment and enable a material flow management. Thereby buildings like trees and cities like forests can be developed which create a positive footprint while at the same time putting human health at the center of attention.
In Cradle to Cradle inspired buildings only materials shall be used which can circulate in biological or technical production cycles, thus serving as a resource and whose effects are positive for humans and the environment. By using renewable energies, buildings shall provide more energy in the long term than they use themselves – a energy-positive building. With partners and companies from the field of architecture, facade and building construction and designers, we create a built environment that is as effective as nature.
The implementation of Cradle to Cradle inspired elements does not replace building certifications according to DGNB, LEED or BREEAM standards. Applying Cradle to Cradle principles must rather be understood as an addition to a comprehensive building analysis and the verification of materials used, so that buildings with the highest possible positive footprint can be created.
Thus Cradle to Cradle inspired buildings are about putting these concepts into practice through creative elements that esteem the presence of people around the world and promote their innovative power.

Digital Tools – Building Material Scout & Material Passports
The use of sustainable and certified products is being promoted by databases and platforms such as the Building Material Scout. There, all material-related information on products and building materials is collected and structured. In addition, manufacturers can have their products evaluated according to the building certification systems DGNB, LEED and BREEAM.
For builders, architects, planners and construction companies, the platform offers the opportunity to find recyclable and healthy construction products, to get in touch with manufacturers and to organize data management for construction projects. In the end, a Material Passport is created for each construction project, which provides the building owner with structured information for his building – for example, how high the proportion of recycled material in the building is or how high the available raw material value is.

A core instrument for the planning and construction process is the “Material Passport“. As an intellectual extension of the well-known component catalog of building physics, all information relevant to building ecology regarding the materials and constructions used is brought together and evaluated. The Material Passport, as an important element in the material management of a building, was the core of the EU research project “Buildings as Material Banks“, which aimed to develop tools for further implementation of the Cradle to Cradle principles and their practical application.
